We filmed at the end of 2019, and have since moved on to editing and post-production, there will no longer be any behind the scenes... for now! We don't want to give too much away right now! But look out for the Oct. 31st release! Some of you may be a part of the private screening!
BUT... after we finish with the screening, we will also be releasing some more, new behind the scenes information. Be on the look-out for topics like "You Get What You Pay For..."

One of the main parts of Thistle's house is his fireplace. It not only holds some of his weird, rare objects, but the chimney is also the spot where the magic Looking Glass will be hung. Below are pictures of the building process:
Now that the main set rooms have been built, I am moving on to creating the props that will be inside these sets. This includes furniture, pictures, objects, really anything that will sell the feel of being in this new, magical world. Some of the props (like crates and things like that) you may wonder why I made them instead of just buying them. Well, simply put, it is cheaper, and easier, for me to just build some of these out of free scrap wood than to pay for them elsewhere. Below are some furniture props that have been completed!
As I stated in the last post, building real sets are very time-consuming. However, seeing my idea start to come to reality has been an absolutely amazing feeling! Below are some new set photos. Click on them to enlarge!
I'm not used to building an actual, physical set for a show (beyond my experience with VBS sets). I usually shoot on a green screen and then create a digital set for the characters. But, for this show, I wanted a real set that you could actually feel like you were inside, present in the events. Below are some photos of the process. It takes a long time to make a set, let alone multiple (especially when you have a regular job and 2 toddlers haha!). Click on the images to see the photos full sized!
I'm not going to inundate you all with a million props, but suffice to say, our prop game is strong haha! We were able to buy a TON of items that look like they fit in this little fantasy world. But there were 2 instances that I thought should be showcased.
We found a fantastic T-Rex skull for cheap at the store "At Home." The issue was that it was made to look like metal (see first picture). But, with a coating of cream spray paint and a black wash to dirty it up and show off the details, it ended up looking like a proper skull. Next were the funny little oddity jars. I created the labels, printed them out, but gluing them to the glass ended up being a bit of an issue. However, while browsing the internet for answers, it was a beer labeling website that ultimately came to the rescue. What did they say to use? MILK! Whaaaa??? You read that correctly: milk! Turns out, milk is an amazing paper-to-glass adhesive! They turned out great! Well, here we are, starting the journey towards creating a tv show! There are some aspects of getting ready for this show that I will not be going over in this blog (specifically, the building of the puppet characters). If you want to see the building of the characters, please feel free to visit http://pkhd.weebly.com/puppet-builds-blog.
Now that I am done writing the script (will hopefully be about a 30 minute episode) and creating the characters, my current phase is set designing. There are 3 different sets to design: Thistle's Treehouse, Phineas' Fantastic Crystal Emporium, and a third (shhh... it's a secret). Both the Treehouse and the Emporium will be very fantasy-driven in atmosphere. Both of the first 2 sets will be fairly cluttered with fantasy/magic/halloween type objects and props. Part of this clutter will be bought props (I will be raiding yard sales for hidden treasures!) and some will be homemade props. Part of the homemade props will be a ton of apothecary-type bottle with colorful, glowing liquid and slime inside. Click on the last picture above to get a sneak peek at some of the labels that will adorn that bottles. As I continue to design and build, I will try and update this blog as much as possible. And, hopefully, we will be building the sets very soon! Stay tuned! |
